RSA 2016: Women Speak Out On The Trials And Joys Of Infosec Careers

SAN FRANCISCO โ€” Kerry Matre is one of the few women who have risen to senior positions in IT security.

As a senior security product marketing manager for Hewlett-Packard Enterprises, she helps build security operations centres for customers. But she admits sheโ€™s come close to quitting.

Not from the stress of the work, but from boorish men in the industry, usually at trade shows. โ€œPeople have a couple of drinks and then decide its OK to speak whateverโ€™s on their mind,โ€ she said in an interview. โ€œThings that begin with โ€˜I shouldnโ€™t say this in front of girls, but Kerryโ€™s one of the guys.โ€™

โ€œIf you start out with a statement like that you shouldnโ€™t be saying it.โ€

Matre was one of five women who hold IT security-related jobs speaking Monday at the RSA 2016 conference on the trials and joys of being a female in the industry, and how to increase their numbers.

The numbers arenโ€™t pretty. 56472957
