MTS close to selling off its Allstream telecom property to U.S. firm

Manitoba Telecom Services Inc. (MTS) and U.S.-based Zayo Group Holdings Inc. announced today that theย sale ofย Allstream Inc. is close to completion.

Itย was reported this past November that Winnipeg-based MTS would offloadย itsย Allstream IP communications business to the Boulder, Colo.-based communications infrastructure group for $465 million in cash, markingย the first time a foreign firmย would completelyย own a Canadian telecom service since the government relaxedย foreign ownership rulesย in 2012.

Zayoย providesย communications infrastructure services, including fibre and bandwidth connectivity, colocation and cloud services to business customers; the company has stated thatย Allstreamโ€™s fibre network โ€” more thanย 20,000 kilometers of fibre connecting all major Canadian markets and 10 U.S. network access points โ€”ย representsย one of the main reasons for theย acquisition.

Both MTS and Zayo are currently in the process of โ€œclosing the transaction expeditiously,โ€ย the companies said Monday.
