Pricey lunch with Yahoo

Silicon Valley is all a buzz about who placed the winning $90,000 bid on a lunch with Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer.

The online charity auction for a lunch with Mayer which was held by Charitybuzz.com came to an end at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, but the online auction site said it still has to confirm the top bid.

โ€œThe winner will dine one-on-one with Mayer and learn what it is like to lead one of the worldโ€™s most well-known tech companies,โ€ a press statement from Charitybuzz said.

A table in a fancy restaurant might not be part of the deal though.

โ€œI am excited to host lunch at Yahoo!โ€™s very own URLs cafe in support of their important mission,โ€ according to Mayer who was quoted in the Charitybuzz statement.

Proceeds of the auction, which started June 11, will go to the Aspire East Palo Alto Charter School (EPACS), a K-12 public charter school focused on preparing children for college. About 95 per cent of EPACS students come from low income families and the school has a college acceptance rate of 100 per cent. Mayer said she has been โ€œinspired for yearsโ€ by EPACSโ€™s โ€œincredible work transforming the lives of young people through unique, rigorous and innovative educational environment.โ€

While $90,000 might seem a lot for a cafeteria lunch, it still pales in comparison to the price of a coffee break with Apple Inc.โ€™s Tim Cook.

A recent Charitybuzz.com auction for a 30-60 minute coffee break with the Apple CEOย came up toย $610,000.

Still Mayer might smile at the thought that she beat out Jack Dorsey, CEO of mobile payment company Square Inc. Theย auction for a lunch withย him to benefit at-risk high school kids, topped up at $31,000.

A charity auction for the benefit of the RFK Centre for Justice and Human Rightsย  offering a meeting with Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk, fetched $20,000.

A golf game with actor Samuel L. Jackson raised $5,250.
