Research in Motion Ltd. has released an updated PlayBook operating system, OS 2.1, which it says simplifies management of the device and offers more security and connectivity.
ย The update allows PlayBook owners to encrypt all the personal data on their device with โenterprise-gradeโ encryption, RIM says. Meanwhile, the text messaging and bridging functions have been improved. Users can send SMS messages via their BlackBerry phones using a new version of the Bridge, which can be downloaded on the BlackBerry App World. They can also print documents virtually to a PlayBook from a desktop. And for business users, itโs now possible to register online for the BlackBerry Mobile Fusion server, which adds extra layers of authentication and security.
The tabletโs In-App payment system now works for Android applications as well as native Blackberry apps. RIM has opened up the platform to Android developers in a bid to increase its market penetration.
The update is available for download in the PlayBookโs software centre.
