Juniperโ€™s financial challenges continue

FRAMINGHAM, Mass.ย  โ€” Juniper Networks Inc. is facing challenges due to timingย of new product rollouts and shifts in investments from customers and channel partners.

As expected, Juniper announced a disappointing fourth quarter and an even more disappointing outlook for the first quarter of its 2012 fiscal year. Due to softened demand among service providers for its routers and switches,ย the network equipment makerย posted a 6 per centย drop in revenues for the fourth quarter of 2011. Despite record annual revenues of US$4.45 billion,ย it sufferedย a 33 per centย plunge in earnings for the year.ย

โ€œThe December quarter was an atypical and unexpectedly weak finish to the year, with reduced spending by some of our largest customers,โ€ Robyn Denholm, Juniperโ€™s chief financial officer, said in a statement. โ€œWhile long-term industry fundamentals remain strong, we expect the near-term environment to remain challenging. We will invest in support of our strategy while continuing our focus on execution and prudent cost management.โ€

At the time Juniper warned that the quarter would be softer than expected, rival Cisco Systems Inc.ย said Juniperโ€™s challenges were company-specific and not endemic of the industry at large. Analysts seem to agree, and they point to shifts in spending among Juniperโ€™s customers, and in strategies among its channel partners.

โ€œTo some extent, Juniperโ€™s recent sub-par performance is simply a matter of timing,โ€ writes Scott Dennehy of Technology Business Research, in a bulletin on Juniperโ€™s results. โ€œAs service providers attempt to monetize the dramatic increase in smart phone and tablet adoption by shifting capital expenditures from the fixed to the mobile network, much of the investment is taking place in the Radio Access Network, where Juniper has limited offerings.โ€

Dennehy also notes that OEM partner Dell Inc., which recently acquired switching competitor Force 10, will end its relationship with Juniper this month; and thatย Nokia Siemens Networkโ€™s move away from the fixed access market โ€” where the Juniper partnership is key โ€” to focus on mobile broadband will have โ€œa significant impactโ€ on Juniperโ€™s service provider business.

โ€œRouting execution seems to be a new critical issue,โ€ states UBS financial analyst Nikos Theodosopoulos in his report on Juniperโ€™s quarter. โ€œThe root of the challenge is unclear and may stem from various factors: 1) capex shift to wireless, 2) share loss, 3) product transition, or 4) structural (market) changes.โ€

The product transition UBS refers to is Juniperโ€™s introduction of four major new platforms: The T4000 core router; the PTX packet/optical transport system; the MobileNext enhanced packet core for wireless networks; and the QFabric data centre/cloud switches. These have been cited as drags on previous Juniper quarters as well and they are not expected to ramp up until the second half of this year.

โ€œWe believe Juniper continues to suffer from inconsistent/lumpy service provider spending, something that is increasingly difficult to predict,โ€ notes Ittai Kidron of Oppenheimer & Co. in his bulletin on Juniperโ€™s quarter. โ€œIn addition, Juniper is at the beginning of several product cycles complicating revenue recognition and raising the execution bar.โ€

On the plus side, Juniper [NYSE: JNPR]ย did record an increase in enterprise sales in Q4: 5.6 per centย from Q3, and 9.4 per centย from last year. Switching product revenue increased 28.9 per centย from Q3, and MX Ethernet product revenue increased 11.3 per cent.

But with service provider accounting for 60 per cent-plus of Juniperโ€™s revenue, Q1 2012 will be down as well. Juniper expects revenue to be US$960 million to US$990 million, and earnings per share to drop by about 55 per centย from Q4.

โ€œWe believe the long-term demand fundamentals remain intact and we are confident about the growth potential of our new product portfolio,โ€ Juniper said in a statement. โ€œHowever, our outlook for the March quarter reflects near-term uncertainty in the macro-environment and the effect it may have on the level, timing, and prioritization of customer demand.โ€

Analysts are waiting for more clarity from Juniperโ€™s business. Says Oppenheimerโ€™s Kidron: โ€œWe see too many moving pieces โ€ฆ with unclear timing and mixed execution. With competitive pressures rising and multiple product transitions taking place in the midst of macro headwinds, we believe execution risks are high.โ€
