MP Web sites lack opportunities for involvement: Study

Canadian politicians get good marks in taking advantage of the Internet in broadcasting their message to the people. However, they are failing miserably in offering constituents the opportunity to become engaged in the political process, according to a recent study.

Between August and September this year,

Samara also found that five MPs appear to have no Web site at all.

MPs are good at reporting about their work. About 75 per cent of the MPโ€™s Web site contains information on their work on Parliament Hill and 65 per cent talk about work in their riding.

Sixty per cent of the Web sites contain the MPโ€™s calendar of events and 63 per cent describe what services the MPโ€™s office provides.

โ€œMPโ€™s donโ€™t seem interested in soliciting citizenโ€™s opinions online,โ€ Samara said.

For instance:

  • Less than one in four MPโ€™s Web sites encourage citizens to sign or submit petitions
  • Only four per cent offer the chance to volunteer with the MPโ€™s office
  • Only one out of 10 MP web sites had space for public exchange, such as a comment box or a news post or a discussion group

The study also found that score differed along party lines. Hereโ€™s are their scores from highest to lowest:

  • Independent MPs: 8/14
  • NDP: 7.8/14
  • Liberals: 7.2/14
  • Conservatives: 6.9/14
  • Bloc: 6/14

MPs aged 35-44 tend to have more complete Web sites. Female MPsโ€™ sites lead over their male counterparts โ€œbut only by a hair,โ€ Samara said.

Web sites for MPs in British Columbia were โ€œmarginally betterโ€ than those from other parts of the country, according to the report.
