Organizations are stepping up their adoption of hybrid cloud solutions over the next three years while the use of private clouds and on-premises hosting environments decline.

Research commissioned by cloud hosting and managed services company

“The proposition of hybrid cloud is compelling: cost savings, business agility, and operational efficiencies are the qualities that IT decision makers are looking to bring into their organizations,” said Toby Owen, vice-president of product for Peer 1.

Based on the results of the poll, it appears that economic reasons are the main cause of the shift to hybrid clouds.

When asked to name the IT priorities of their businesses, respondents cited: IT cost cutting (49 per cent); and improving process and operational efficiencies (45 per cent)

Owen said hybrid cloud adoption is being held back by security and data protection concerns.

The barriers to achieving these priorities were: Security (53 per cent); and data protection (46 per cent)

Other challenges cited by the respondents were:

• Budget constraints (39 per cent)
• Lack of efficiency (25 per cent)
• Legacy technology restrictions (22 per cent)
• Protection of intellectual property (20 per cent)
• Investment already made in on-premises solutions (18 per cent)

“Clearly these are areas where businesses cannot compromise,” he said. “Fundamentally these are concerns about a perceived lack of control.”
