The server is built to support data-intensive computing, the company says
Hewlett-Packard Co. has released a new generation server built for handling large datasets in distributed environments.

The Proliant SL4500 is designed to work especially well with the Hadoop and OpenStack open-source platforms, combining substantial processing power with large amounts of storage. HP says the new server will save on data centre space and will be cheaper to operate than its equivalent in general-purpose servers.

The SL4500 will only need three racks, compared to seven racks for ordinary servers, HP says, according to this article in ComputerWorld. The company also says it would use around 60 per cent less power. With capacity for three computing nodes with two processors each, the server will use x86 chips and support up to 180TB in disk storage.
