Intel eyes 3D for laptop and tablet Webcams

Intel Corp. is working on a โ€œdepth sensingโ€ technology which would transform laptop and tablet cameras into 3D tools that can sense movement and track emotions.

Apart from bringing a new level of interactivity to 3D games, the improvements will computers understand humans better and โ€œbridge the gap between real and virtual world,โ€ said Anil Nanduri, director of perceptual product solutions at Intel.

He said the enhancements will Webcams to โ€œsense excitement and emotionโ€ and can be used in monitoring childrenโ€™s feelings such as when they are having problems reading certain words.

The camera can also sense depth, size, distance, contours and other parameters.

Depth sensing cameras, he said, will be embedded into laptops, and ultrabooks in the second half of 2014.

The technology will appear in external Webcams such as Senz3D external Webcams which is being developed jointly by Intel and device maker Logitech. From there the technology will trickle down to tablets and smart phones.
